Learning outcomes

1. Knowledge and Understanding
Students will develop an understanding of:
a) the role of the economic and political forces shaping the integration process;
b) the rationale of the single market and of the EMU;
c) the connections and relative functions of fiscal, monetary and structural policies.

2. Applying knowledge and  understanding
Students will be able to apply the acquired analytical tools and critical abilities to specific integration and policy issues

3. Judgement, focus  and  communication skills
Critical readings, class discussions and presentations will enhance students’ general ability to analyze and communicate clearly complex economic questions and to pass informed judgements.



Program

The course analyses current problems of EU integration in historical perspective, with particular reference to Mediterranean Countries.
Main topics:
History and Institutions of the European Union
Regional Trading Arrangements: Basic Theory and Growth Effects
Enlargement
Monetary Union: Theory, Stages, Costs and Benefits
Current Problems and Prospects



Development of the examination

1. Exam.
Written test: 10 multiple choice questions; two open questions out of three.
One term paper

2. Assessment criteria.
Students must demonstrate a good comprehension of the analytical tools and the ability to critically assess different viewpoints
 
3. Grading scale
Positive grades: from 18 to 30. Cum laude can be bestowed to outstanding performance
The final grade of International Integration will be an average of the two modules
4. Grading method
Multiple choice questions: 1.5 points for each correct answer;
Open questions: 0-6 points each;
Final paper: 0-5 points.

Baldwin R. and Wyplosz C, The Economics of European Integration, 4th Edition, McGraw-Hill
Additional readings will be suggested during the course.
